“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

    Have you ever played the game where you wispered in the persons ear next to you something and by the time it got to the end it was entirely different? This is what you have to guard againgst in training. Keep to the source and your art will be pure. Like a bubbling spring!

    Wanted to share this testimonial from my Florida group. Despite my recent relocation out of Florida…Shadowhand Wing Chun is alive and well down there and Neil is doing a great job passing on the skills… Great job Neil & Joe and thanks for this write up:

    I’m currently an M.M.A fighter and have started studying SiFu Doc Savages Shadowhand Wing Chun under Neil who was taught and still is learning under SiFu Justin Corey. I’ve only had about 6 main classes, a few semi private, and couple private lessons. Since I’ve started learning Shadowhand Wing Chun I’ve greatly enhanced my overall fight game. It has shown me a smarter way to fight. Very complex but very simple. Overall my fight defense has shown most helpful. When I started learning Shadowhand Wing Chun it was what I was trying to do by myself but didn’t know how to. It was like a light bulb coming on. I no longer fight force with force but I do use many defensive and offensive Shadowhand Wing Chun techniques to defend, counter, and attack to gain an edge over my opponents. I’ve only just started and yet have been enlightened so much. I can’t wait to continue to learn and to continue to become a better fighter and person. Here are two writings from my MMA coach and another fighter that I’ve sparred against.

    “I don’t know what Joe is doing but it amazes me how he continually gets better. He is faster, smarter, and hits a lot harder (trust me I’ve felt it) than when I first met and started with him. The most visual part I see is his fight defense is way stronger then it was before. Joe was a good if not great fighter when I first met him now he may be unbeatable in the cage. I don’t know what he is doing but Joe buddy keep it up!” C.M.

    “I was here with this team longer than Joe has been and we’ve sparred quite a few times. He’s a great fighter and every time I spar him I learn something about what I can do to better my fight game. But honestly since about a month ago or a little longer man I don’t even like sparring with you Joe. LoL. I can barely hit you and it hurts like hell to get hit by you. Your becoming a very good fighter I haven’t see one like your talent in a while. Whatever your doing keep it up bro I’m glad I’m in your corner. Hey bro this stays between us too ok lol plz don’t tell nobody that. I’m still a fighter too..Lol.” Fighter M.T.

    This was their exact wording no changes.. Neil your a good teacher and I know SiFu Corey is better. Can’t wait to meet him. ~Joe

    @SiFu Doc Savage
    To me, this speaks of establishing and maintaining high levels of tactical awareness and readiness. It speaks to the mental game known as “war-gaming” and “what if-ing”. This passage relates to what the Apache Scouts knew intrinsically and excelled at…move slower and with more discernment…pushing out a field of awareness in all directions around you so that you can glean information and have time to process it before you blunder head on into trouble.
    From a more Wing Chun perspective: this speaks to receiving what comes, not fighting force with force…(i.e. be like water) both in the physical sense, as well as the mental/spiritual realm.
    Just my opinions 🙂

    I have herd it said that one who excels in safeguarding his own life does not meet with rhinoceros or Tiger when travelling on land nor touched by weapons when charging into an army.
    There is nowhere for the rhinoceros to pitch his horn; there is nowhere for the Tiger to place his claws; there is nowhere for the weapon to lodge its blade.
    Why is this so?
    Because for him there is no realm of death.

    Another fantastic seminar from SiFu Savage. From the gon sao drills, chi sao, pole and knives, there was something to be learned. What amazes me about SiFu is his willingness to share and teach the finer details of a technique or drill, and it’s these details that exponentially increase the effectiveness of one’s wing chun. Thank you again SiFu Savage, for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Special thanks to SiFu Beck for allowing to train at his place, and to all my seniors and fellow students who assist me on my wing chun path.

    Just had another awesome weekend seminar. SiFu Doc was busy fine tuning our skills and bringing us further down the rabbit hole of WC. With the right guide, WC offers a lifetime of adventures and learning…especially as it relates to ‘complete’ WC. Thanks again SiFu Doc for furthering our knowledge. Thanks also to Bobby for the use of his home/facilities. It was great to meet and train with all the Shadowhand students and disciples. DILLIGAF! 🙂
