“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

The recent seminar in Panama City was incredible. I would like to thank Sifu Doc for his dedication and patience I would also like to thank my Wing Chun brothers who attended the seminar and made the training realistic. You never know what you really learn until you are tested, thanks for the test

Still sore and nursing bruises from this past weekend’s seminar. You know the saying “Fire forges Steel”? That’s how I would describe the training. I learned so much from the intensity and reality-based nature of Saturday’s class. Indeed, wing chun is pounded down and not passed down! But it just wasn’t the physical and technical aspects that had me impressed. SiFu shared a good amount of philosophy and history to round out our knowledge. Sunday was great as well – just hanging with SiFu and the disciples. More technical training, lots of Q&A, and just all around camaraderie. Thank you SiFu, for all that you taught and shared with us, and thank you disciples and fellow classmates as well for helping me in my wing chun path. Looking forward to the next seminar!

The recent seminar this past weekend was amazing. SiFu Doc yet again gives literal meaning to the term “everlasting spring”. From fighting, sparring, chi sau, philosophy, power training, kicking, wooden man, etc etc…it was non-stop the entire weekend. The Wing Chun world is lucky to have someone of Doc’s caliber. His knowledge and experience is boundless. Thanks to SiFu Doc and SiFu Doug for an outstanding weekend of quantum level training!!!!!!!!!!

We did quan saos -vs- punching tonight. Sounds simple right? It was not. SiFu threw a twist in there (& not to speak for the other guys) our techniques got blown up. It was very interesting & informative, but also frustrating & unsettling. Fixing what’s broken is going to be a focus point as always. Just when I thought I was getting my horse together a little bit – BOOM! The last 7 days have been power-packed from a WC standpoint. It’s fuel for the fire! If it was easy everybody would be doing it.

Hi J M. Thanks for posting to this board! I am sure the members on here would love to learn about your wooden man form. Can you provide more information about it, its movements, your lineage, your SiFu, etc? Please feel free on this board to use your own name and not initials.

The seminar was fantastic! After just a month of leaning, I’ve had my eyes widened to see the vastness and depth of the art. The small connections I’m starting to make just leave me hungry for more. The location and attendees created a very conducive environment for training and everyone was so generous with insights and assistance. Thank you Sifu for such a great learning opportunity and leading by example which lights our path of understanding. Thank you Bobby for your hospitality providing the venue and good eats. And also thank you all who attended which made this possible, especially Enero who took many drill beating for my benefit! 😀

Can’t wait to bring what I’ve learned to the next class!

Yet another great weekend of Shadowhand wing chun training by SiFu Doc. True wing chun is pounded down, not handed down. It was great to see my brothers and train in the company of them again. Thanks also to Bobby for the use of his house and hospitalities. Good times, great training had by all. SiFu Doc’s knowledge of WC never ceases to amaze!

As for all of my fellow attendees, thanks, I learned something from each of you. The atmosphere was very conducive to learning. Good energy & lots of support. To echo my opening remark: AWESOME! Day one in the books. Lots of great teaching going on in Holt! SiFu turned the spotlight on several things that I never stopped to consider. Makes me wonder about all the things that I don’t even know that I don’t know (nod to D. Rumsfeld) – there really is no end to your WC journey. I vote for a 3 day seminar every 4 months.

OK – just watched the video from the guy that choreographed the Ip Man movies. The “real world” section seemed laughily movie-like. The assailants were attacking pretty slow. Ridiculously slow actually, & the attacks didn’t make much sense: who is going to try to hit someone with a fluorescent light bulb? From a self promotion standpoint that shit was GENIUS! He had a little movie; he had some wooden man (though he looked sloppy on it) & he got to mention IP MAN a lot. He did have a nice move in there though – the inside leg trip looked useful to me. If all else fails you can always rub your forearms around with the guy that’s trying to take your head off until you get your opening to unleash your 12 CHAIN PUNCH COMBO on his punk ass! sheeesh
