“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”
A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:
“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”
Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:
“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

Great job Capt. J!!! Keep up the good work!
Just wanted to drop an update regarding a couple of my students.
Yeah, I’ve gotten in on the “wing chun against bullying” thing 😉
I was approached and agreed a few months back to start training a couple 13yr old boys from my neighborhood.
One isn’t much bigger than one of my legs, but has an IQ of over 180. Very smart kid.
The other is his best friend, and I consider him “Mr. GQ” hah.
They had been having some issues of bullying, didn’t really get TOO bad, but was there nonetheless.
Over the last 3 months, they have progressed quite well.
They don’t go around bragging, or anything of the sort–they have taken the “rules” to heart and maintain ‘no ego’.
An attempt at bullying was tried, and I’m happy to say FAILED!! 😀
Although a “fight” did not ensue per se’, all hits were covered and several traps were handed down to the offenderS…. yes, plural. (the young student refrained from throwing any strikes, based on the immediate circumstances–although he did mention he could have very easily injured the bullies)
Now, they are known as “ninjas”..lol. Whatever that means.
Although I am by no means a great wing chun practitioner, I AM happy that my students are utilizing what has been handed down to me in their everyday life. Especially the young ones–their grades have improved, social standing, and overall confidence factor.
Just wanted to pass it along 🙂
It was a pleasure to meet Dave Shirley today and I look forward to making a trip to Huntsville and meeting up again, maybe we can find some rose to train with.
Listen and hear the TAO!!! This is “SHADOWHAND WING CHUN” as I am attempting to teach it to those who will listen!
As it was communicated to SiFu Justin Corey.

Outstanding Kelly! Good for her!
Great job Kelly
I wanted to post this here for all to see:
Shadowhand student Kelly Fox has been teaching some Wing Chun strategies and techniques to a woman who lives in the apartment complex where he works. This past weekend, she was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, who began choking her. She was able to respond with a finger strike to the eyes, which gave her the time and space to draw her gun and shoot him. He got ahold of the gun and got away, but he’s in critical condition today, and she’s not facing any charges. KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). That’s Shadowhand Wing Chun, and one little technique likely saved her life. Thanks, SiGung!
Ed
Here’s the story in the news:

A man who is extremely foolish should come to know something in the end because of his faith . On the other hand , isn’t said ” A half – baked martial art is the foundation of great injury ” Takuan Soho .
Kelly Fox asked me to post the following for him:
“Hey, Doc,
Just wanted to thank you for such a great seminar. As usual you’ve given me so much detailed information, easily understood and readily usable. Your patience and ability to explain the topic at hand gives me the tools to problem solve where most of my questions I end up answering myself. I’ve never been to any of your seminars where one person left with an unanswered question. With even such little exposure to the info and a small amount of practiced you know one can only do so much in an eight hour day. I walked away with the confidence that I am better off now at either end of the blade, and that’s saying a lot because blades can be scary, especially to the novice. Please thank everyone: Bobby, Enero, Aiden. Hopefully JC will make the next one. Thank you very much!
Patrick Kelly Fox

To paraphrase Doc: Train everything! Train the things you are weakest at the MOST!
So there I was thinking that my fundamentals were quite sound; Gon Sao & Tan Sao both G2G (good to go) & then we have class. Now SiFu has shown the spotlight onto the bad habits that I have “trained in” so it’s back to the lab! Back to basics! – Train until you cannot get it wrong. Thanks SiFu!
“You don’t need a partner to do the Gon Sao drills.” Doc
With the sun just coming up and features hidden, I could only make out dark figures.. but even at a 100 yards I could still recognize the big, stocky man with the ponytail as my Sigung.. the one and only Doc Savage!
Now when I first heard Doc was going to do a seminar on knives.. KNIVES.. I really cant describe my excitement. Why?
To set the stage, a person writing a book on the history of Wing Chun, and has done MUCH research on the different Ip/WC lineages, discovered that THE most aggressive and proficient student of Ip Man was a private student, Leung Shiu Hung.
This same student was mesmerized with learning Ba Zam Do, or WC knives. He discovered the exact blade placement for.. ‘quick kills’.. through it’s application on wild packs of dogs, as well as a few encounters with armed robbers.
This helps one to appreciate why over the years, S.E.A.L. Teams, FBI, etc., understood that Leung Shiu Hung, [OR American], DUNCAN Leung, with a blade, was the most dangerous man alive!
Ask yourself.. WHY else dedicate the training of these agents and their lives.. to Duncan.. for decades?
This ‘deeper’ knowledge of knives by Duncan, was passed on to Doc.. which HE is now sharing with US??
Now then.. do you realize that as I walk toward the pavilion, it ‘overwhelms me’ that I am about to be taught knife defense by the man knife experts consider one of the top two IN THE WORLD?
That being said,
Although I am very new to Shadowhand WC [less than a year] and this was only my second seminar.. as I am walking and get closer to the pavilion, it felt great to walk up and see my brothers.
Ed.. I would like to talk more on the 7 stars. Enero, don’t know why you doubt yourself bro.. you truly have the gift!
I feel when you see me you must think.. DOH.. here’s that new guy. But if you do you hide it well. lol
Seriously, thank you for your patience, realizing what I’m doing wrong, [HUGE as a Sifu] and taking time to correct me. Thank you!
Bobby, wished I had more time to train with you [and get that mayo recipe].
It was great meeting and training with the rest of you!
Doc.. Sigung.. THANK YOU for passing this on to us!
I’ve been in MA for decades and have seen politics and ego. Yet with you, in the morning after my 3rd question, YOU then approached ME all seminar, and like a kid on ADD and chomping at the bit, asked if I had any questions for you [which I did] and you freely, and eagerly answered.
Where the hell were you 20-30 years ago?? lol
Just wish Sifu Corey could have made it.

Once again Sifu Doc Savage proves he is one of the greatest martial arts instructors in the world !!! I am proud to call Sifu Doc my friend and teacher. Thank you Doc for such a great seminar!!! And thank you to all who attended , the willingness to train and help each other was outstanding. The knowledge that was shared and friendships made can only come from a group of individuals united in a common goal. The goal was to learn from the best and that we did. Special thanks to Bobby for being so helpful and sharing with his knowledge. I hope to train again with everyone soon.
Yet another awesome seminar, training DOC SAVAGE Wing Chun. There is no price tag that can be placed on the opportunity to learn directly from The SOURCE. Thank you, SiGung, for your openness and enthusiasm; the experience is truly a blast, all pain aside! LOL 🙂 Even the few moments during the break, where you helped me improve my elbow pressure, were more than worth making the trip. In just 10 months with you, I have nearly filled my notebook that I bought four years ago, and I know that its contents only scratch the surface of what you have to offer those dedicated to learning!
Bobby, Enero, and others: Thank you for your input, suggestions, insights, and fellowship. Training with you brothers makes the pain fun, humorous, and enlightening. I always look forward to seeing you whenever I’m in town! Shadowhand. F@%*$ YEAH!
SiGung, thanks again for welcoming us and for ever reminding us to “Learn the lessons of the drills” and “Keep It Simple, Stupid.”
As always it was an incredible and eye opening seminar. After all this time Doc still has so much to teach it is mind boggling, as the saying goes,” the more I learn the less I know.”
It was great to train with all my Kung fu brothers and the dedication you show is inspiring, I look forward to our next encounter. Remember when your ego does not get in the way of your training there are no limits to what can be learned.
Thanks to all who attended!
Thank you for your time and effort!
Thank you for working so hard!
Thanks for everything! You are the best of the best!!!

The first SHADOWHAND seminar I ever attended covered this topic back in 2011 when I was new to WC. Reviewing those notes before this seminar proved to mostly be frustrating. At that time I did not know the names for most of the techniques/hands & was forced to create names to call the hands as I jotted down notes. Rereading them now, most of that sh!t makes no sense; I no longer understand what I was trying to communicate to myself.
(My WC is a work in progress & along the way my note-taking has improved.)
After the seminar I can figure out what I was trying to say:
1) Do not fight force with force (but of course we will use force – it is a fight after all.)
2) Protect your centerline (by whatever means is appropriate for the threat.)
3) Simultaneously attack & defend (because it is faster & more efficient & it is a pillar of WC.)
4) Do not fight the weapon; fight the man (the weapon is an inanimate object.)
New Rules: (Which are not new, I just have the eyes to see/understand them better now.)
1) Keep it simple. (The more time you spend adding superfluous moves the more likely it is that something will go awry. You are on the clock!)
2) Again, fight the man not the weapon. (Do not focus on the weapon; it only moves when the opponent moves it.) – Hard to do, sure.
3) Take the space. (Flip the aggressive switch to the ON position.)
4) Use the pillars of WC correctly & the amount of possible responses trends toward innumerable amounts.
-To do this you have to 1) have a fuller understanding of the principles in the first place.
2) R E L A X; which is still hard to do after all this time.
So I am left to reconsider my understanding of the WC pillars & where & why I am coming up short when I fail to execute. This give me more questions to ask on the 1-800 SIFUDOC Hotline.
Do I still stare at the weapon? Mostly, no. However I remain more concerned with IT than the opponent. When the “attitude” is changed to a new & thrilling presentation – I tend to fret until I am shown the way past it. Brain-freeze in a major way. 🙁
Do I remain calm at all times? No. 🙁
Do I really have a deeper understanding of those WC pillars? Well now that I am thinking about it no, not deep enough. If you cannot seamlessly apply them to the situation at hand without hesitation – clearly they are not “dialed in.” 🙁
Do my hands work independently & effectively? Well I won more than I lost so they WERE effective enough, but there remains a lot to be desired. 🙂 & 🙁
Is the AGGRESSIVE switch turned on? Yes, but like a fluorescent light bulb that gives you light but has not flicked on completely yet. Which is weird because I thought I was a badass. 😉
Anyway those are some of my thoughts on the day. Was the seminar great again? Yes, you know it buddy. 🙂
To everybody that attended: good training with you! To those who could not attend: I’ll catch you the next time. Keep training everybody!
Heads Up!
I will be in the park at 0600 for all you early birds!!!
Thanks
Foe all you early birds! I will be at the park at 6:00 am.

So riddle me this? You know this sifu who talks behind other sifu’s backs. Saying stuff like “they are full of stuff” and you could devastate them at will. Then that same sifu runs into that someone they talked stuff about and the first thing you do is apologize to them. What happened to that tough guy he was before? So, IMHO it’s best to keep you stuff to yourself and you won’t have to grovel. Cause some day you will have to put up or shut up!!! Have a nice day!!!
