“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

    @SiFu Doc Savage

If one adds up the amount of time in “the manual”…its only about three years or so (given nominal training time and number of classes per week) for a student to complete a majority of the wing chun system curriculum. Add in some privates, and some focused seminars, and it is possible for the highly dedicated and loyal student to progress quite quickly. I don’t think this would be ‘stringing them along’…
There are other wc organizations that “string” students along for many many years…incrementally advancing them in ‘rank’ in order to keep them around longer I suppose.
The path laid out in the manual is about as black and white as it can get. Step 1: do this for this long, etc. Step 2: do this for this long, etc. After so many lessons and/or time has passed, a student is ‘tested’ before moving on. Seems fairly reasonable to me.
Newer teachers/less experienced instructors may use the manual in a strict fashion; whereas experienced / seasoned wing chun practitioners can “reference” it if/as needed as they move a student along through the world of WC.
WC is quite abstract…and a manual, written by someone with decades of experience to “light the way”, in my opinion is quite a valuable item. If needed, it can create order from chaos; help track a students’ lessons and progess; as well as assist the teacher in keeping multiple groups of students with varying class attendance on track.
It is also quite useful to get a class or group back on track after a sidebar discussion. As we all know…students ask questions that must be answered. This typically takes the form of the SiFu stopping everyone in class in order to address a students’ question so all can benefit from the answer given.
Furthermore, ones learning of the WC system is never at an end in my opinion. WC knowledge and learning seems to be an “eternal spring”. I often find more and more depth and meaning to what was once viewed as obtained-knowledge or skill. Just yesterday I was checking out some WC videos online and saw a really cool drill. I thought to myself “man, I wish I could learn that drill”. Upon further reflection of the “little ideas” deeply seeded inside the Shadowhand drills I’ve already been taught…the same skill of that cool drill was already part of my WC. I’d been taught its essence years ago.

In summary then………………my advice for this individual (who apparently has issues with a manual that he states his sifu doesn’t even follow (WTF???)) is to do what I recently read in some magazine…TRAIN MORE, TALK LESS.

They’d never show up to Holt, FL. That’s the thing about being a flower: immobility. Shadows exist; ghosts don’t. Isn’t that right, Dussy? 😉

    More crap from scot wats
Thankfully my sifu dustin carol) isn’t stringing people along as required by the author and text of this “manual”. Thank you SiFu for not agreeing to the terms laid out in the manual and changing everything to this method of stringing students along. If Yip Man were taught this way, it would take him 20 years to learn the system.
Little does he know his teacher still follows the recommended training, not very well but still does! And when he bought it would call me and asked how to use it.
    Also stealing my quotes!
Does he ever have an original idea?

To all my Shadowhand Wing Chun brothers: have a great Turkey Day!
Remember your WC training and principles when at the dinner table: receive what comes (turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc)…; follow what goes (if someone gets up from the table to go get more food/drink…follow them!)…; hit what legs go (if one of your relatives won’t let go of that last piece of vittles…hit em’!). 🙂

I’d like to wish all the Shadowhand Family a Happy Thanksgiving holiday! SiFu Bobby said something that really meant a lot to me last time we were in Holt. I made the comment that the hospitality in Holt, FL, was like being at home. His reply: “You *are* home.” Thanks again for welcoming us!

Great week of training this week thanks to the refinement given by SiFu Doc Savage at last Saturday’s seminar! Wing Chun is simple, but it’s devastating! If you want to learn an efficient, logical method of self-protection, look no further than Shadowhand Wing Chun!
Thank you SiFu Ed Holt from the Memphis Shadowhand Wing Chun!
I am looking forward to seeing you in Dec. I hope Kelly can make it too! He has shown great improvemant over the past year!

Enero, I wish I lived a couple of hours closer! I’m going to have to attend a Thursday and Saturday class when I’m on Spring Break! Oh, I failed to mention: Adam, it was great getting to meet you last week! My apologies for not mentioning that in my last post! December is just around the corner, and I can’t wait! Thanks again, SiGong! In every sense of the word, you have been a SiFu to me, and I appreciate it!

Part of me doesn’t want to say this, but part of me does: Thursday night classes are awesome! SiFu pics a topic & dissects it down to the fine points. Depending where you are in your journey it may fly right past you, but no matter – your WC gets an upgrade. BOSS UP!

Thank you, SiGong, for another information-packed seminar. As always, I appreciate your insights and direction in helping me to improve my practice. I am grateful to everyone else for the comradery, insights, pointers, laughs, and headaches from the hits! Thank you, Bobby, for providing us lodging during our stay and for making us feel right at home, as well as the shockwaves through my head when I ran into your fists. Thanks again, Justin, for helping me with the second Four Punch drill and with my Chi Sau. Captain J, it was great meeting you and Joseph; we’re looking forward to training again! To My Trusted students, Instructors and Disciples,
I feel as though we have had enough fun at the expense of the white rose school and its instructors and teacher I would like to request that we cease and desist in the continued reference and perpetuation of these people. It is obvious to the most casual observer; they need us more than we will ever need them. Let’s instead expound on the benefits of the way we do things in the most positive way we can.
Thank you one and all for your continued support!

Central Mississippi Wing Chun – Shadowhand

    Awesome Shadowhand Seminar!!

Once again shown WHY Shadowhand is so much more effective than others. Once again shown proper technique and Soooo much more.
Once again given MASSIVE clues haha.
Training with The Sigong and The Masters is always extremely enlightening, though-provoking, and proves “the concept”.

I especially enjoyed the correct “seed tossing” technique, the correct way of building… callouses on the inside of your arms, and the armpit crossover maneuver haha

It was also a pleasure the meet Sifu Ed Holt and Kelly from Memphis Shadowhand Wing Chun , very honorable and knowledgeable Shadowhand Brothers to the north. Looking forward to continuing our path together, and as always was a great pleasure to be able to train with SiFu Doc Savage Sifu Adam Rose Sifu Justin, Sifu Bobby Beck Master E, Ryan Corley and the rest. The knowledge imparted by the Shadowhand Masters is, bar none, priceless.
And as always–has never come from a Lillie flower.

Latest & Greatest WC Findings: (in no particular order)
    1) Origin of the primary hands used in Steal & Seal. (In front of my face all the time, but thanks to the pointers I see them.)
    2) SLT, CK, BJ Fok saos.
    3) SLT, CK, BJ elbow positioning & movements.
    4) CK Tok sao sections!
    5) Reminder that we are to take the space between the sticks & DRIVE in!
    6) Reminder: Relax but maintain elbow pressure at all times!
    7) Better use of the lines in training. My previous usage only scratched the surface of the potential of simple lines. Huge difference!

Fun training as per the norm. Good training as per the norm. Thanks to Bobby for providing the location. Thanks to all the regular attendees (Bobby, Jason, Todd, Scott, Aiden) & the new regulars (Ed & Kelly) & the irregulars (Jerry) & the brand new (Joseph) – (you know who you are; it was great training with you) & welcome back Adam! Thanks to SiFu Savage for once again shining the light on WC & taking such an interest in our improvement along the pathway to WC mastery.

Shadowhand Wing Chun is a simple and practical method of self-protection against real life, asocial and antisocial, violence. For this reason, our first rule of a fight is to “Fight for Your Life.” Fighting for your life means using whatever means available to survive a violent altercation, and it may require tapping into a primal side that you never knew existed; it may also require fleeing. Our goal is to train ourselves to quickly analyze dangerous threats and to respond accordingly without requiring much time to think. Remember: you don’t rise to the level of your expectations; you fall to the level of your training. How do you train?
Well said SiFu Ed Holt, Memphis Shadowhand School.

Each time I come to Florida to learn Shadowhand Wing Chun, I leave with a wealth of information that surpasses all that I’d learned previously. Thanks, SiGong, for your willingness to accept me and teach me when those guys in the rose garden lied on me and accused me of all sorts of idiotic mess. At times, I’m embarrassed to show what I’d been taught over the last three years because what I’d learned was different from what you’ve been teaching. And the difference is not because you changed anything, but because of the other guy changing something or just not having it in the first place.

I can’t say “Thank You” enough to SiGong, Bobby (for the lodging and the bruise on my leg lol), Justin (good side kick), Enero (for the pointers and conversation), and everyone else for the opportunity to improve my skill and share in the fellowship. I’m thankful that Doc Savage is the type of teacher who enjoys answering questions, giving examples, and sharing his knowledge and wisdom. Thank you for helping me with so much, specifically with my footwork and forms, and for teaching me the RIGHT way to do the Steal and Seal and to do Lop Sau! I’m looking forward to the next seminar!
