“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”
A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:
“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”
Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:
“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

Gotcha, email has been sent. Thanks.
Darryl, send me an email.
Hi, I would really like to order a copy of the power, speed and flexibility workbook. Is this only available amongst your Pai? thx.
That is correct, I did not pay anything to become a desciple it was a gift that Sifu Doc gave me. Becoming a disciple is not something you can steal nor is it something you should be able to buy. The idea that a thief cherishes his bounty is absurd, a person who steals does so because they are jealous of the possessions of someone else and feel entitled to it but are not willing to work for it and earn it. Some say people do not cherish a gift because they have no vested interest in the gift, I suppose this is true of some people, but out of all of Sifu Doc’s disciples I know of only 3 that have disrespected him and in that manner the art he has so generously shared.
Bobby,
I was there when you took your disciple picture and from what I understand you didn’t have to pay $3000 to be a disciple. You became a disciple by being dedicated, loyal, and working hard at improving in the art. I am glad to see that you earned your discipleship through hard work rather than having to pay an expensive fee for it. This is true of all of those who SiFu Doc Savage accepted as a disciple. This is very honorable of SiFu Savage and is unlike some other wing chun teachers I know. My advice to anyone who decides to teach wing chun is to not cheat people out of their money. Discipleship is something to be earned not bought. Thank you SiFu and all my wing chun brothers for keeping honor in the art.
I read a comment,” if one relies entirely on the teacher one will never find the treasure.” So the question I have is, how long does one stay with a teacher? That depends on the teacher, if a teacher has an extensive amount of knowledge on the subject it will take many years to learn all you can, if a teacher has limited knowledge, don’t waste your time. It is better to learn from the experiences of others than to try to experience everything yourself.
AEvery class I go to I learn a little bit more, does that mean I am relying on my teacher to much, or am I taking advantage of the experience he has had with an open mind and a willingness to learn and reach a higher level of understanding of my art.
I also read where it was suggested the student steals his art, I don’t have to steal Sifu Doc’s art he has given it to me.
Sifu Doc request everyone he has given permission to teach using his name to attend a seminar at least once a year to maintain the standard he has set and to continue to learn and grow. Some people can not handle that commitment and it shows. When someone brings you to a higher level you must either learn to train at that level or you will fall off.
I have been training for over 12 years and I have attended every seminar Sifu Doc has had except one. Does that mean all I do is copy Doc and I have nothing to call my own art?, Maybe Maybe not.
The real question for me is, if I find myself in a situation where I need to protect myself or my family, will what I have learned work? I don’t care if I am called a carbon copy of Doc, I take that as a compliment, I care if it works.
I’m still really curious as to the why “shadowhand”. It’s certainly not because he is some kind of “shady character”. Would it have to do with how he strikes? After all, it’s hard to defend against some thing coming out of the shadow’s.
By the way I heard the same story of Sifu Doc receiving the name Shadowhand from Duncan Leung before I ever met Dustin, and I heard this story from people who were there as well as from Doc.
It seems there is some concern as to when I became a disciple of Sifu Doc Savage. I am not sure why it matters but the fact is I had my original disciple picture taken in Dustin’s garage. Sifu Savage had already talked to me about being a disciple, I told Doc I was honored but I did not need a picture or a certificate to prove my talent or level of Wing Chun and that his friendship and dedication to making me a better martial artist was enough. Becoming a disciple was never important for me to train under Doc Savage, but it is an honor and I take the responsibilities of being a disciple very seriously.
After my picture was taken Dustin shook my hand and congratulated me and asked “if I knew what the picture meant?”
I told him that I knew and he asked,”why aren’t you more excited?”
I told him I was honored but it was just a picture. After all Doc had already declared me a disciple.
I still maintain that being a disciple has very little to do with my skill level, my skill is determined by my dedication.
I hope this clears up any confusion for those that have concerned themselves with my relationship with Sifu Doc Savage.
Just for the record he was my Sifu and I his student first, then we became friends, and then I became his disciple.
I am still his student, disciple, and most importantly friend.
Shadowhand is a name of honor given to SiFu Doc Savage by SiGung Duncan Leung. Shadowhand and SiFu Doc Savage are one and the same, i.e. Shadowhand Wing Chun Kung Fu. It doesn’t matter if at one time there was a website called Executive Fitness indicating Wing Chun instruction and another later as Shadowhand Wing Chun etc. Executive Fitness website had SiFu Savage pictures and info recognized as the product owner of wing chun instruction for that site . Shadowhand Wing Chun website when created and current still has SiFu Savage pictures and info recognizing him as the product owner of wing chun instruction of that site.
Exactly where did the name ” Shadowhand”come from.
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows…” Here’s a gem – Proverbs 6:16-19 (Esp. verse 19).
Thank you, Ed. Look forward to seeing you and your students next time.
@Stan
Sorry I missed your visit Stan. Hope to make it down again soon.
Thank you Sifu! Was great seminar and I enjoyed seeing and training with everyone. I hope everyone realizes just what a rare honor it is to meet, train and get to know you. Looking forward to Aug 23! Bobby, I’ll bring a “real spare” in case I get another flat tire! Thanks again for the help!
Stan
Thank you to everyone who follows SHADOWHAND’s exploits. There will be more exciting chapeters coming your way, soon!
Awesome seminar, and great to meet new like minded individuals! Thanks SiFu for the great instruction and wealth of information expanding what we always seem to ‘think’ we know. Looking forward to the next one!
I was just advised to go look at a post on Scott Watts FB page and on it he copied my recent post here, saying “integrity is hard to come by.” Well I could not agree more, when someone teaches something they know won’t work and charges money for it, that not only shows a lack of integrity it is crooked, when someone tells out right lies about scenarios that happened that is lack of integrity, and when this same person tries to scare people from training with others for fear of them learning the truth that is also a lack of integrity.
Doc has always encouraged me to train with others to test what he teaches me, he has never had the fear of someone finding out that all he taught was lies.
If anyone wants the truth about what happened they should do their own investigation and not rely on the words of one person, the guys that came from Memphis learned the truth.
Thank you SiFu for the bad ass training this past seminar! To our memphis brothers thanks for coming down to train with us and I hope we get to see you all again next seminar. Peace and love brothers!
SiGong, Stan, Bobby, et al., it was a pleasure meeting you all! This was an experience that was totally unexpected. I appreciate your hospitality and generosity. Everyone was helpful, courteous, and brotherly. SiGong, I thank you for being supportive and for correcting me on numerous things. Your explanations were simultaneously simple and profound, especially the controversial Kwan Sau. Thanks again, SiGong for having us! We’re already looking forward to next month!
We had the privilege of training with a group from Memphis, it was a pleasure and I look forward to our next encounter. We also had Todd and Scott come from Panama City and Stan came from Tallahassee, as always it was great to see you and to get to train with you guys.
I also enjoyed the very tall tales that have been told about myself and Doc and must apologize that no one received a broke leg or had to go get stitches. I hope you were not to disappointed.
Small minds think alike!

Doug we will miss you-keep in touch. It was great training with my brothers. Thank you SiFu for the tidbits. Learning never seizes. The Lop Sao, just on that alone you could write a book and then some.
@Bobby
anytime my friend. I’d travel twice that distance/duration if I had to.
Always a pleasure to touch hands with you. Thank you for not breaking anything or crippling my aging body or breaking that pole during chi gwan or…..well, thx! 😉
As always I’m late making a comment…
I 2nd everyone else in their own comments–don’t think I can top those as the sentiments ring true with me also.
From Jason, Devin, and myself I would like to humbly thank you ALL (especially the Masters) for all the knowledge so graciously bestowed upon us, and we are already looking forward to the next one 🙂
What a great seminar as always, I had so much information pounded down it is hard to contain so I must start some pounding of my own.
I appreciate everyone who comes to learn, for when you are willing to learn you become the teacher. I thank Justin for his commitment to travel 9 hours one way just to continue his journey in Wing Chun, it is a true inspiration. And Thankfully no one got their stick broke or had to make a trip to the hospital.
@Chris
“I’ve never left feeling less than overloaded with new insights and thoughts regarding the art, takes days to finish processing”
“…TAKES DAYS TO FINISH PROCESSING!”
RIGHT!
What a great experience all crammed into a single weekend! Got to see brothers from afar and meet new ones, all growing together through an intense seminar. I’ve never left feeling less than overloaded with new insights and thoughts regarding the art, takes days to finish processing lol. Thanks Doug for hosting the seminar, good luck on your journey, looking forward to training with you again in the fall. Thanks Bobby for your insights and bringing the hotel with you! Thank you SiFu for always teaching at such an exemplary level displaying your passion for the art. And thanks to everyone who attended making it possible. Keep training!
