“THREE KINDS OF DISCIPLES”

A Zen master named Gettan lived in the latter part of the Tokugawa era. He used to say:

“There are three kinds of disciples: those who impart Zen to others, those who maintain the temples and shrines, and then there are the rice bags and the clothes-hangers.”

Gasan expressed the same idea. When he was studying under Tekisui, his teacher was very severe. Sometimes he even beat him. Other pupils would not stand this kind of teaching and quit. Gasan remained, saying:

“A poor disciple utilizes a teacher’s influence. A fair disciple admires a teacher’s kindness. A good disciple grows strong under a teacher’s discipline.”

On Finding a Teacher
On one fine summer day, as I strolled aimlessly along a riverbank,
Beset with a thousand disquietudes,
I chanced upon an old woman fishing under the shady cool of creeping willows.
I wanted to ask her my thousand questions regarding the sun, moon and the creation of the universe and my purpose in life and oh so many more,
She placed her fingers on her lips: Fish are rising.
So I stood there and watched.
The freckled river shimmered with flashes of light like scales of an anaconda.
Clouds drift and tugged the blue horizon with their thick, silken strands;
Shadows of the willow grove deepened.
I felt my questions draining away.
Finally, as she slowly reeled in her line, I laughed as I saw that the line was without a hook.
How does one catch fish without a hook? I wondered.
As she turned to go, I know that tea is ready and I am invited.
Following behind her light, drifting footsteps, a gentle breeze combs through the willow branches,
I catch fragments of their whispering: A big one she caught.

    Thanks to SiFu Doc for another great seminar. Good training combined with good company. A long drive for me but always well worth the journey. To those who couldn’t make it: Shadowhand Wing Chun footwork and leg use against multiple opponents were just 2 of the many topics trained.
    Big thank you to SiFu Doug for the use of kwoon and facilities! Thanks Brother!

    Thanks SiFu Doc; one more great seminar in the books & many more valuable lessons placed on display in plain site. The subjects covered always leads to a new discovery about the art & the wannabe artist. (Me.) Always a pleasure to train with my WC brothers (far & near) & get a taste of all the different energies, mentalities, & thoughts. I look forward to the next time. Study, Search, Test!

    P.S. Only the strong!

    I train under Sifu Brian K. Edwards up in Fayetteville, NC who trained with Sifu Doc Savage when they mastered the Wing Chun System and I was able to train with Sifu Doc Savage just recently while I was visiting family in FL. I highly recommend learning from Sifu Savage if you are in his area.

    I hope that my brother will be able to make it over to train and learn Wing Chun from you sooner than later. I am thankful to have met a training partner of my Sifu and also to expand the kung fu family; if I’m ever in the area again I’ll be sure to stop by. Thank you again Sifu Doc Savage, I’m glad we were able to meet.

    Merry Christmas to all! After many years as a student and Disciple. They could be viewed as the same thing. As we are all students our entire life. A Student learns knowledge and technical skills ” Basic Training ” A Disciple is the serious, dedicated student and has learned the basics and commits his life to the philosophical teachings of the art and follows the leadership of one SiFu/Father who has chosen to guide them on a life long journey , a way of life ” Advanced training” To be a Disciple is to be set to a higher standard. I have seen many Students and Disciples come and go. But SiFu Doc has always stayed focused on teaching his students , preservation of Wing Chun , and remaining to open more “Doors” for those who stay to learn and train .

    @Bobby
    I concur!!! Not sure what all the fuss is about. SiFu Doc has instructed me openly and honestly. Not sure if that makes me a “closed door” or “open door” disciple. Also, the term ‘secret’ is highly abstract and ambiguous.
    Discipleship has its benefits…for example: close friendship!!! 😉

    To address the question of Sifu Doc having “closed door disciples”, I have been a student of Sifu Doc Savage for 11 years and am currently a disciple of his and I have never known him to have a closed door policy, he teaches everyone fairly and just past their level of proficiency. He has never to my knowledge required an appointment to join or held anyone back from learning. What makes me a disciple has nothing to do with any secrete he taught behind closed doors but rather the commitment and dedication I have shown. I hope this clarifies the question of “closed door disciple.”

    Thanks to SiFu & Bobby for stopping by to help me out; one of the reasons Shadowhand is so badass is that you can get the help you need, when you need it to improve your WC.

    SHADOWHAND in Tennessee, you say? AW HELL YEAH, I say!

    I wanted to thank Sifu Doc for the huge gift of knowledge you past down to us this past seminar. Like Sifu Justin said in his comments, “its endless and limitless” We are so lucky to have these great seminars. It was very nice to see my Wing Chun family and hope to see them soon. Sifu Bobby thanks for letting us use your place to train. Sifu Justin thank you for all you do for me.

    As always, the recent annual Holt retreat was amazing. Lots of new drills involving aspects of Bil Jee form; counter-kicking drills; extensions of Lop Sao drill; power training; etc… the list goes on and on. It is truly amazing to experience first hand the depth of knowledge that SiFu Doc brings to us who are learning and growing in wing chun. I firmly believe it is endless and limitless.
    Thanks again to SiFu Bobby for the use of his home and facilities. Always greatly appreciated. It was also great to see and train with the Shadowhand clan again.
    It’s been said many times before…and its worth repeating because its that important: good wing chun is pounded down, not handed down. Train hard & Learn the lessons of the drills!!!

    SiFu Doc, this was the best time I every had training. You provided a lot of material to keep me busy and help improve my Wing Chun. You are the real deal SiFu, and I really enjoyed training with everyone. For now, I will practice what I learned and use my Bobby plate to help turn my horse. Looking forward to the next seminar.
